Calculate
Multiply
Multiplies numbers, or scales records by a number — rent up 3%, a balance into another unit. Records times records go period by period.
| Port | Side | What it carries |
|---|---|---|
factors | In | Two or more numbers or records; everything on this port is multiplied together. |
out | Out | The product — a number if only numbers came in, records if any records did. |
What you choose
Usually nothing. Wire in what should be multiplied and it is.
When records meet a number, the card shows what is being scaled, and you can pin it:
- Balance mode — every balance is multiplied, and the amounts follow as the steps between them.
- Amount mode — every amount is multiplied, and the balance is walked again from zero: a view of the flows alone.
Left on auto, the card says which it picked.
What Fluidly decides
Multiply adapts to what arrives.
| What you connect | What comes out |
|---|---|
| Numbers | Their product, as a number. |
| Records and a number | The records, each row scaled by the number. |
| Records and records | One row per period: the two sides lined up and multiplied period by period. |
On auto the data decides what is scaled. A bank account or a balance sheet is scaled by its balance; an income statement by its amounts. A slice of an account — rent out of one bank account, say — is scaled by its amounts, so that rent × 1.01 moves the account by one percent of the rent, not one percent of everything in it.
Records times records are lined up at the coarser of the two: daily rows times monthly rows multiply month by month.
Example
Bank Account → Category (rent) → Multiply → Timeline, with Number (1.03) → Multiply: what the rent comes to after a 3% rise, month by month.
