Round

Rounds a number to whatever you report in — whole thousands, millions, two decimals. On records, it can round dates too.

PortSideWhat it carries
inInA number, or records.
outOutThe same number or records, rounded.

What you choose

How far to round. Open the card with the pencil and drag across the number: every digit you pass turns to a dimmed zero. Where you stop is the precision — thousands, millions, or decimals. There is no field to type into.

Which way, for a single number: Nearest, Up or Down. Up always means towards the higher figure, so a loss rounded up gets smaller.

Which column, for records: the amount, another number the records carry, or a date.

What Fluidly decides

Records are rounded fairly. Rounding thousands of rows the same way on every tie makes the total drift. So records are rounded to the nearest even figure on a tie, the way banks do, and the up/down choice is not offered. The balances are then walked again from the rounded amounts, so they still agree with the rows that produced them.

Dates round to a calendar. Pick a date column and the digits give way to a sentence on the card: round to the next, previous or nearest — workday, a weekday such as Wednesday, a day of the month, the last of the month, a quarter or a year.

Example

ERP (unpaid supplier invoices) → Round → Timeline, with the due date rounded to the next Wednesday: what leaves the account, on the day your payment run actually goes.
